EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT
Β Β Β Β Β Because life goes on!
Β Β Β Β Β Because life goes on!
Education and employment are about far more than qualifications or earning a living. For many people, they represent:
confidence
purpose
independence
personal growth
social connection
and the opportunity to contribute and achieve
Following OOKP surgery, or adapting to sight changes, questions about education, training, work and future opportunities are common. You may be wondering:
"Can I still work?"
"How do I explain my needs?"
"Could I return to study or retrain?"
"Where do I even begin?"
These questions are completely understandable. Our Education & Employment Support service exists to help members explore possibilities, understand available support, and move toward goals with greater confidence and practical guidance.
People with sight loss can and do succeed in education and employment, when appropriate support, accessibility and encouragement are available.
This is a peer-led guidance and support service, designed to help members explore learning, work and future planning, in ways that feel achievable and realistic.
We understand that every person's situation is different. Some members may be:
returning to previous work
considering career changes
exploring self-employment
looking at volunteering
returning to study
or simply beginning to think about future possibilities
Our role is to support those conversations and help identify useful directions and resources.
WE CAN PROVIDE!
β Peer encouragement and shared experience
β Goal-focused discussion
β Practical signposting
β Confidence-building support
β Help exploring options and opportunities
This is not formal careers advice or job placement. It is supportive guidance and peer encouragement, helping members feel informed and empowered.
Work and learning are not only financial issues. They also support:
confidence and self-esteem
social interaction
routine and motivation
independence
wellbeing and identity
Research consistently shows that employment and learning opportunities can positively influence wellbeing, independence and social inclusion for people with sight loss.
For some people, success means returning to work. For others, it may mean discovering entirely new opportunities. Both journeys matter.
Learning can open new doors and build confidence. We understand this, as many members often ask about:
returning to education
accessible learning methods
online courses and training
skill development
confidence building through learning
exploring new interests or qualifications
Accessible learning and supportive environments can help people with sight loss develop skills and confidence throughout life. Whether you want formal study or simply wish to learn something new, we encourage curiosity and growth.
Work after OOKP may look different β but different does not mean impossible. Through our own experience, we are aware, members may want support exploring:
returning to previous employment
discussing workplace adjustments
phased returns to work
rebuilding confidence after time away
managing concerns around interviews or disclosure
workplace accessibility ideas
Reasonable adjustments and workplace support can help visually impaired employees remain successful and productive at work. Sometimes, the first step is simply talking openly about concerns and exploring possibilities. We can provide this? We can then help you explain this to your employer. In the UK, we can also help you access the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) who have a dedicated disability department, who also work with employers, to ensure returning to work is seriously considered, with help in providing specialist equipment if necessary.
For some people, traditional employment may not feel like the right fit. That's perfectly okay. Self-employment can often provide flexibility and independence that suits changing health needs, recovery, or personal circumstances. Many disabled people choose self-employment because it allows greater control over schedules, workload, environment and working methods.
This may include:
running a small business
freelance or remote work
online services or digital businesses
creative work or hobbies becoming income opportunities
consultancy or sharing lived experience
flexible self-employment that works around your lifestyle
Many disabled entrepreneurs and self-employed people build successful work around their strengths, interests and lived experience. Research also shows that some people are drawn toward self-employment because it offers more flexibility and control than conventional employment.
As seen in our newsletter, we have members experienced with self-employment and we can therefore help members explore:
business and self-employment ideas
building confidence around working independently
discussing realistic goals and expectations
identifying helpful training or learning
signposting to organisations that support disabled entrepreneurs
understanding support schemes such as Access to Work
Mentoring for creating realistic business plans, so the venture has a high degree of success
Access to Work may provide practical support to help people start work, stay in work, or move into self-employment, depending on circumstances. Local Chamber of Commerce are available in almost every UK town, providing training courses and assistance with becoming self'employed, giving all the necessary tools to become successful in your chosen venture.
Self-employment is not the right path for everyone β and can bring both freedoms and challenges β but for some members, it may open exciting and meaningful opportunities worth exploring. Get in touch and see how we can help!
Sometimes, confidence grows through contribution, connection and the feeling of wanting to help others. Volunteering can:
build confidence
develop skills
increase social contact
strengthen CVs and experience
restore routine and purpose
Many people discover renewed confidence and direction through volunteering and community involvement. Remember, Purpose matters. Opportunity and contribution comes in many forms. For example, we are always seeking volunteers to help run our services. Want to get into on-line training? Why not begin obtaining experience by running a tech course for us! Love helping family and friends and want to take it further? Why not volunteer to help run our carers cafe!
We can offer so many opportunities for volunteering, helping you obtain or strengthen the skills you need for your success. Simply get in touch for more opportunities.
